Speaking after Gor Mahia’s commanding 3-1 victory at Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday, 17 May, the former Swedish-based centre-back praised the team’s resilience and mentality, insisting the performance reflected champions in waiting.
“It was a crucial game; we knew from the start we needed to win, and we came out guns blazing. We started well, but then conceded. We still had the fight in the boys and went on to win with a good margin,” said Odhiambo.
The defender also weighed in on the jubilant scenes witnessed after the final whistle, with Gor Mahia players and the technical bench taking a lap of honour around Nyayo as thousands of fans celebrated wildly in the stands.
“You can see title celebrations are almost there, but we go again for the next game against Mara Sugar. This is Gor Mahia; the 22nd league title is coming home. Keep it locked,” he declared.
His defensive partner, Mike Kibwage, echoed similar sentiments, crediting Gor Mahia’s composure and experience for helping them navigate a pressure-filled encounter.
“Experience decided the game today. We showed we wanted it more than Seal and played with calm nerves. We managed to control the game, dealt with the pressure and got the win,” stated Kibwage.
The victory came barely 24 hours after fierce rivals AFC Leopards had intensified the title race with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Kakamega Homeboyz at Mumias Sports Complex.
That result had temporarily piled pressure on Gor Mahia, who headed into Sunday’s clash holding only a slender one-point lead over Ingwe in one of the tightest title races in recent FKF Premier League seasons.
Odhiambo is chasing his second league crown in Gor Mahia colours, having previously lifted the 2020/21 FKF Premier League title before securing a move to Swedish outfit Djurgårdens IF in 2022.
