In a heartfelt condolence letter addressed to Football Kenya Federation (FKF) president Hussein Mohammed, the FIFA boss mourned Thigo as one of Kenya’s most influential football figures whose contribution to the game left a lasting mark both locally and internationally.

“In memory of Allan Thigo. Dear President, I would like to express my sincerest and heartfelt condolences on the passing of former international player Allan Thigo. Words seem inadequate to express the sadness we feel for this loss,” read part of Infantino’s message.

The world football governing body president hailed Thigo’s immense contribution to Kenyan football during an illustrious playing career that saw him earn over 80 caps for the national team.

He further highlighted the midfielder’s role in helping Harambee Stars qualify for their maiden Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament in 1972.

Infantino also paid tribute to Thigo’s successful stint at Gor Mahia, where he established himself as one of the finest midfielders of his generation.

Among the defining moments of his club career was helping K’Ogalo clinch the 1976 league title unbeaten before guiding the side to the final of the 1979 African Cup Winners’ Cup.

“Harambee Stars and Gor Mahia FC legend, known for his creativity, vision and commanding presence in midfield, his dedication and passion for football, his legacy and achievements, and in particular his leadership, his personality and his human qualities will not be forgotten, and he will be truly missed,” Infantino added.

“On behalf of the international football community, I wish to extend our deepest sympathy to the Football Kenya Federation, and to Allan Thigo’s family, friends and loved ones.

Our thoughts are with all of you. We hope that these memories and our words of support may help bring some peace and solace at this difficult time.”

Thigo passed away on Saturday, 9 May, at his home in Bungoma following a short illness, bringing to an end the life of one of Kenya’s most celebrated football icons.

In accordance with his final wishes, the former Harambee Stars midfield maestro was cremated on Wednesday, 13 May, at the Hindu Crematorium in Kisumu, with the final rites conducted within 72 hours.
