The move comes barely hours after Mara Sugar confirmed a change in venue from their home ground, Awendo Stadium, to Wang’uru Stadium in Kirinyaga, owing to security concerns raised in the days leading up to the game.

In a letter to Mara Sugar CEO Ruth Omalla, FKF Head of Leagues and Competitions Frank Ogolla noted that he had declined the venue change request by the Sugar Millers, after Wang’uru Stadium failed to meet the league guidelines.

“The League and Competitions Committee notes that your choice of venue was neither registered as your alternative venue, nor your second alternative venue,” part of FKF’s decision read to decline the choice of Wang’uru Stadium.

“In addition, the venue is more than 200 kilometres from your primary home venue.”

As per the Committee, Mara Sugar had presented three venues to host its league matches this season.

In that list, Green Stadium, Awendo, was registered as the club’s primary home venue, with Raila Odinga Stadium and Jomo Kenyatta Stadium, Mamboleo, indicated as the first and second alternative venues, respectively.

With the high-risk nature of Sunday’s match rendering Awendo Stadium unfit to host the encounter, Mara Sugar’s decision to move the game to the 10,000-seater stadium in Kirinyaga County was viewed to be in contravention of Rule 18 and Rule 3.1.5 of the 2025 and 2019 FKF Rules and Regulations Governing Kenyan Football, respectively, forcing the federation to force its own hand on the situation.

“Guided by the Regulations and the document submitted by your club, please be informed that the match shall take place at Raila Odinga Stadium, Homabay at 1400 Hrs,” the committee stated, adding that the decision had been made “in the interest of the game, and in upholding the Competition’s Rules and Regulations.”

Driven to their backyard, Gor Mahia could seal their 22nd league title on Sunday with a win, or at worst, depend on an AFC Leopards loss to APS Bomet on the same day at the Wilson Kiprugut Chumo Stadium in Kericho.
