Former Gor Mahia captain Kenneth Muguna has paid a heartfelt tribute to departing club veterans Philemon Otieno and Ernest Wendo, praising their long-standing contribution to the club’s success over the years.
The duo, among the longest-serving players at Gor Mahia, were officially honoured on Sunday during the club’s final league match of the season against Nairobi United at Nyayo Stadium, a fixture that also marked the team’s coronation after winning a record-extending 22nd FKF Premier League title.
Muguna, who shared the dressing room with both players during his two spells at the club, reflected on their journey and the legacy they leave behind, noting that even as their game time reduced in recent seasons, their influence remained important within the squad.
Speaking about Philemon Otieno, Muguna recalled their shared beginnings and long journey at the club.
“We signed on the same day, announced captains on the same day, and 9 years later, you went on to have a great career. I wish you all the best in your next chapter. Congratulations, Philemon.”
Turning to Ernest Wendo, Muguna highlighted his longevity and consistency at the highest level.
“11 years at the top is such a remarkable achievement; you left a mark, and I am sure you'll be successful wherever you go. Respect my friend, and I wish you all the best in your next club. Congratulations, Wendo.”
Both players have played key roles in Gor Mahia’s domestic dominance over the past decade, helping the club secure multiple league titles, cup triumphs and strong continental performances.
Although their playing time diminished in the last two seasons, the club opted to retain them, with Sunday’s title celebration offering the fitting moment to officially bid them farewell.
Wendo, who joined in 2015, leaves as one of the most decorated players in Kenyan football history, ending his Gor Mahia career with eight league titles.
Otieno, who arrived from Ushuru FC in 2017, grew into a key leader and eventually captained the side, also taking up additional team management responsibilities this season, earning respect for his leadership both on and off the pitch.
