The biennial continental tournament is expected to be one of the most competitive editions yet.

A total of 73 highly experienced officials, comprising 28 referees, 31 assistant referees, and 14 VAR officials, have been appointed for Africa’s biggest football competition.

All match officials are expected to arrive in Morocco on Monday, 15 December, for an intensive preparatory course ahead of the tournament.

The programme, led by CAF’s Referees Department, will include physical, technical, and theoretical assessments designed to ensure optimum performance throughout the competition.

Although Kenya did not qualify for the tournament, they will be represented by four officials who were selected after participating in the preparation course. All four are FIFA referees with international experience.

Leading the group is Dr Peter Kamaku Waweru, the only centre referee from Kenya selected to officiate at the tournament.

Dickens Mimisa has been appointed to the VAR team, supporting on-pitch officials. The other two, Stephen Yiembe and Gilber Cheruiyot, will serve as assistant referees.

East African neighbours Uganda and Tanzania, both participating in the tournament, did not produce any officials for this edition.

The tournament begins on Sunday, 21 December, with the opening match between hosts Morocco and Comoros at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, which will also host the final on Sunday, 18 January.

President of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, Fouzi Lekjaa, announced yesterday that 800,000 tickets for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations have already been sold.

Speaking at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Maâmora, Lekjaa revealed that all matches involving Morocco are officially sold out, with every seat snapped up.
