K’Ogalo had a false start to the 2025/26 league season, suffering a disappointing 1-0 loss to Bidco United in a match played on Sunday, 21 September at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

The all-important goal was scored by second-half substitute Newton Ochieng in the 88th minute. Ochieng stepped up to convert from the spot after Ghanaian import George Amonoo had committed a foul in the box.

The loss was also the first for newly appointed Gor Mahia coach Charles Akonnor, who took over the reins from Zedekiah ‘Zico’ Otieno, who was sent packing at the end of last season following an underwhelming campaign that saw the Kenyan giants finish trophyless.

Following the defeat to Bidco, the Green Army took to various media platforms to express their dissatisfaction with the loss, laying blame on different quarters.

“I am yet to approve of the coach. Apart from losing, I failed to understand his idea of football and how he wants to set up the team. We lacked a clear plan in the game.

There was no cohesiveness in terms of attack and how to get a goal. This is the second time I have watched us, having watched our match against Simba, and the story is the same.

He is a foreign coach and therefore I expected much more from him and not what I have watched for the two matches,” Nicholas Ochieng told Mozzart Sport.

Fredrick Nyamunga was in agreement with Ochieng, noting his concerns for a repeat of last season’s heartbreak.

“We were meant to believe that Zico was the problem last season, and we fought so hard to have him out of the club.

With the appointment of a new coach and especially a former Black Stars coach, I expected better performance and dominance in matches, but there were no signs of such.

We were so average against Bidco, and I was left to wonder what will happen if it was against fellow title contenders,” said Nyamunga.

On her part, a fan who introduced herself as Adhis (Adhiambo) questioned Akonnor’s fielding, attributing it to the full-time results.

“We signed so many good players, but the coach found it fit not to use them. He must therefore take the blame for the loss.

Most of the players that we signed took part in CHAN (2024 African Nations Championship), and it is therefore such a direct action to slot them into the starting eleven.

Where were Bandi (Lewis) Bryne (Omondi) and Siraj (Mohammed), for instance? We all saw them perform well in CHAN, but the coach benched them,” Adhis lamented.

However, for some fans, the players were fully responsible for the loss to Bidco based on what was termed as a below-par performance.

“For a long time, we have been blaming and chasing away coaches, but I have come to realise that all along we have been wrong.

The problem with the team squarely lies with our players. We have so many players who are giving below-average performances.

These players are paid well, their welfare is well taken care of, but they are not giving us the results that we expect. Gor is not a place for trying out. It is a place to perform.

Some of the players are good but not good enough for Gor Mahia, they fit in mid-table teams,” a frustrated fan told sports journalist Eric Njiru.

On the same platform, popular Gor Mahia fan Subi also blamed players but was not quick to press the panic button.

“The players must up their game. We had an embarrassing last season that we must make amends for. We need players who fight for the badge. This ought to have been a routine win for us.

However, it is the first game of the season, and I therefore urge all our fans to stay calm as there is nothing yet to worry about,” said Subi.

In the end, Bidco continued their good run against Gor Mahia, picking up from last season, where they secured four points from the Kenyan giants.
