Under the agreement between FKF and the new title sponsors for the men's top tier, 60% of the sponsorship amount will be disbursed directly to Premier League clubs as grants

Clubs plying their trade in the Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKFPL) will be receiving monthly grants worth Kshs 300,000 from the top-tier sponsorship deal launched last week.

FKF secured a ten-year sponsorship deal valued at Ksh1.12 billion for the men's Premier League on 31 July this year, with the official unveiling being held last week, ahead of the start of the 2025-2026 season.

Under the agreement between FKF and the new title sponsors for the men's top tier, 60% of the sponsorship amount will be disbursed directly to Premier League clubs as grants.

The remaining 40% will support the administrative and operational needs of the competition.

Before FKF entered into the deal, the men's top-tier had not had a title sponsor since the 2020-2021 season.

Under the new agreement, the federation will disburse Kshs 64.8 million to the 18 Premier League clubs in a year, with additional funding coming from the existing broadcast deal.

The figure has since elicited murmurs among some clubs, who insist that it falls way below their expectations given the longevity of the deal.

According to Kakamega Homeboyz chairman Cleophas Shimanyula, it was not right for the federation to negotiate such a long-term deal without input from the clubs.

What we are getting are peanuts. It smacks of desperation and will not make a difference in improving the league standards. Furthermore, our input should have been sought before the federation got involved in such a deal,” he opened up.

Another club official, who requested anonymity, expressed concerns about the seriousness of the top-flight competition, considering the amount clubs will be receiving from FKF.

I have done my calculations, and the amount comes to not more than Kshs 300,000 per month per club. It begs the question, are we really serious as a league?” he posed..

We should have been involved in the negotiations so that our stand can be known. We would have given our opinion because we are spending a lot of money to run the club, and we need to be compensated adequately. We spend Kshs 3million on salaries every month. What we are getting from the league is a drop in the ocean,” added the club administrator.

FKF president Hussein Mohammed, however, defended the deal, insisting that it is the beginning of good things to come.

Hussein assured that more sponsors for the league would be unveiled in the next two months.

Sponsors always look for value, and the fact is, we did not have anything. Therefore, we had to start from somewhere. It is great to appreciate what we have instead of always complaining,” he said.

He dismissed suggestions that clubs should have been involved in the negotiations, insisting the mandate belongs to FKF.
