Gor Mahia legend Peter Dawo has cautioned that victory in the Mashemeji Derby does not guarantee the FKF Premier League crown, urging K’Ogalo to stay focused in the run-in.

Record league champions Gor edged arch-rivals AFC Leopards 1-0 in a tense derby clash played in front of a packed Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Captain Alpha Onyango struck the decisive goal in the 85th minute, finishing off a Bryton Onyona assist from a half-cleared corner to hand K’Ogalo a crucial victory.

The result saw Gor open a six-point gap at the top of the FKF Premier League, keeping them firmly on course to wrestle the title from defending champions Kenya Police FC.

Ingwe remain second on 55 points with just three matches left in the 2025/26 season.

The win also served as sweet revenge for Gor, who had fallen 1-0 in the first leg at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani on 7 December, 2025.

However, Dawo, part of Gor Mahia’s historic 1987 continental success, insisted the derby result should not be mistaken for a title decider, pointing to the inconsistency shown by both sides this season.

No, the winner of the derby will not win the league. Previously, we used to think that if so and so wins, then it is likely to go that way, but AFC can win the derby or Gor, then tomorrow they go and fail terribly in two or three matches,” he told Mozzart Sport.

Ingwe had come into the derby on a strong run, picking up 12 points from four matches before a 3-0 loss to Police halted their momentum.

Gor, on the other hand, had gone three matches without a win, drawing with Kariobangi Sharks and Bandari before falling 1-0 to Tusker.

Gor have won the derby but may lose in the coming games. Winning the derby is not a must to win the league. They can only take it if they become serious, but it is not automatic,” he added.

The veteran striker, however, pointed to a clear area Gor must fix if they are to go all the way, pointing to their struggles in front of goal.

Gor have looked solid and composed in defense and midfield, but have lacked sharpness in attack, especially following the injury to their leading scorer this season, Felix Oluoch, who tops the club's charts with eight goals.

“Gor are okay in defence and midfield, but they need to be sharper in attack. Those tasked with scoring must have a strong punch. If they are not clinical, then it is going to be tough,” he noted.
