Construction of the facility began in 2019 with the National Government chipping in ahead of the 2024 Mashujaa Day celebrations
When Kwale Governor, Fatuma Achani, moved the Department of Social Services and Talent Management to Kwale County Stadium in June 2025, the intention was simple.

The county boss wanted nothing but better management of the facility, which is considered a hub for sports and talent development.
That vision is now taking shape in a major way, as the 13,000-seater stadium prepares to host the 2026 Mozzart Bet Cup final on Sunday, where Tusker FC will face Kenya Police FC.
Before the final, coastal darlings Bandari FC will meet KCB FC in the third-place playoff, with a brief awards ceremony scheduled later after the main contest.
Once seen as an ambitious target for the relatively new stadium, hosting a fixture of this magnitude marks a significant step for Kwale County, as the oldest inter-club tournament in the country offers a CAF Confederation Cup ticket to the winner.

County Executive Committee (CEC) Member for Sports Francisca Kilonzo has welcomed the development, expressing gratitude to Mozzart Bet and the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) for settling on the venue.
Speaking on Thursday after receiving the tournament trophies and medals, Kilonzi said the county had made extensive preparations to ensure the stadium meets the required standards.
She said key areas of focus have been: the playing surface, stands, VIP section, parking, sanitation and overall fan experience, alongside heightened security.
“On behalf of Her Excellency, the Governor, I welcome all teams and fans to Kwale Stadium for the Mozzart Bet Cup final.
We are privileged to host this final, which aligns with Governor Achani’s vision for talent development. We have put all necessary measures in place to deliver a memorable event,” said Kilonzo.
The Kubo Rangers die-hard fan added that hosting such a high-profile match is part of a broader plan to position Kwale as a sports tourism destination.
She hopes that successful execution will attract more top-tier fixtures to the stadium.
The venue has already hosted several FKF Premier League matches, including Bandari’s recent fixture against APS Bomet.

Top-flight clubs are charged Ksh50,000 for use of the facility, while local teams in structured leagues pay Ksh 15,000.
Kilonzo, who personally oversees daily maintenance of the stadium, said further upgrades are planned, including the installation of floodlights, a tartan track and additional infrastructure to meet higher competition standards.
“The first thing I do before opening my office is walk around the stadium to ensure everything is in order. We are working on what is still missing so the facility can meet all required standards. For now, we are proud to host the Mozzart Bet Cup final," added Kilonzi, who locally supports Bandari.
