Greenwood reloaded: Marseille's ex-United star aims at Newcastle
Reading Time: 2min | Tue. 25.11.25. | 17:30
The former Manchester United forward reborn in France returns to face Premier League opposition as OM chase vital Champions League points (11 pm)
Mason Greenwood steps into the spotlight again tonight. After Marcus Rashford punished Newcastle earlier in the group, Marseille now turn to their own former United striker to shake up the Champions League race at the Velodrome.
For OM, it's a must-win. One victory from four matches has left them in trouble, and Greenwood has become their main lifeline - 11 goals in 16 games, a constant threat cutting in from the right.
Roberto De Zerbi keeps his focus strictly on the football.
"I don't judge private lives. Mason has already paid a heavy price," he said. "Here he's found support, stability… he's a different person from how he's portrayed."
In Ligue 1, Greenwood's numbers are elite: 10 goals and 3 assists, pushing Marseille toward the top. The Englishman says hard preseason work changed everything:
"I knew I had to be fitter and stronger - especially if we want to be champions."
England still looks far away, with Thomas Tuchel ignoring him, and talk grows of a possible switch to Jamaica. Angel Gomes, his longtime friend, stays out of it:
"We talk about FIFA and football, not national teams."
Newcastle know exactly where the danger is.
"He's intelligent, he creates, he shoots… that left foot is elite," Eddie Howe warned.
The Magpies arrive boosted by their win over Manchester City, with Dan Burn back and Anthony Gordon ready, though Kieran Trippier remains out. Two away trips await - Marseille and Everton - and Howe admits they need to rediscover their identity on the road. At the Velodrome, the furnace is already lit. Greenwood is waiting.
