The Colombian star reportedly informed his current club, Minnesota United, that he could hang up the boots after the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup

Unexpected news is coming from Colombia: James Rodriguez may be close to retirement!

At least that's what he allegedly told his current club, Minnesota United, according to the journalist Felipe Sierra on the Es Un Hecho show.

“In Minnesota, they understand that while there is a possibility of extending the contract for another six months, James Rodríguez’s option, which he has already communicated to Minnesota United, is to retire from football after the World Cup. It’s a consideration he has already shared with the club,” he said via AS Colombia.

The former Real Madrid and Bayern Munich superstar joined the MLS side in February as a free agent following a one-year spell with Mexican Club Leon.

Still, across the club's 14 games, James featured in only 7, clocking just 210 minutes and providing 2 assists.

If the information turns out to be true, Rodriguez's fairytale, which began in the 2014 FIFA World Cup, where he won the Golden Boot award, made a name for himself, and caught the eye of Real Madrid, could come full circle at the same tournament just 12 years later.

Nevertheless, James' decision has yet to be confirmed, as the speculations surrounding his retirement should be taken with a grain of salt.

Let's simply enjoy watching Colombia and its captain at the World Cup and talk about the end of his outstanding career once Los Cafeteros’ journey across the USA, Canada, and Mexico comes to an end.
