Imagine paying $62 million for just one Premier League goal

Tottenham's poor season couldn't be improved by the misfiring Richarlison

It feels like it's been an eternity since Tottenham Hotspur head coach Antonio Conte urged the club to sign Everton's star man Richarlison for a fee of around $62 million. It's actually been less than a year, but the climate in North London has changed dramatically since. Besides, a lot has happened at the club, that it's hard to believe it's the same organisation. Conte isn't there, and Richarlison's credentials have been questioned a lot after a terrible season.

The Brazilian forward arrived at Spurs to play in the UEFA Champions League and solidify the club's title hopes. To say Tottenham's season has gone awry would be a huge understatement.

The 26-year-old Brazil international hit the back of the next just three times in all competitions and just once in the Premier League. There were three occasions where Richarlison thought he had scored for Spurs this season too, prompting wild celebrations from the former Wolverhampton goalscorer. However, all three times it turned out he was actually offside - and his over-elaborate celebrations were in vain.

"Easy to say this wasn't my dream season. I came to a club that bet high on my signing and the Champions League to compete. I finish this first season without delivering what I know I can and without achieving Tottenham's collective goals. Anyone who has followed me saw that injuries were almost routine, something that had never happened to me before."

Speaking to Tottenham's official website, the Brazilian promised he'll redouble his efforts for next season - and stop being a target for ridicule for thousands of football fans worldwide.

"Even though I gave blood every time I walked on the field, I know it wasn't enough. Now it's time to rest, get my head right and take care of myself to start all over again next season 100% physically and much stronger."
