The Wajir Stadium is yet another of the many arenas that are under construction in the country as a way of boosting the local sporting infrastructure.
The stadium became even more urgent following the Government of Kenya’s (GoK) decision to host this year's Madaraka Day celebrations at the county as part of the government’s program to host at least two of the national holiday celebrations outside the capital city, Nairobi.
In line with this decision, GoK set aside Ksh900 million to construct the stadium, whose groundbreaking ceremony took place on Thursday, 12 February and was presided over by President William Ruto.
As has been the norm across the other stadia in the country, the construction of the 10,000-seater facility was under the supervision of both the Ministry of Sports and the Ministry of Defense through the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF).
With the celebrations two days away, Cabinet Secretary (CS) for Sports Salim Mvurya inspected the facility on Friday, 29 May, before handing it over to the national celebrations steering committee.
According to Mvurya, the stadium is 90% complete and ready for use on Madaraka Day, after which the remaining works amounting to 10% will be completed.
As per the photos shared online by the CS, the construction of the stands is complete around the stadium, while roofing is at an advanced stage across the facility, with the VVIP dias already complete, including the installation of a canopy.
The VIP area is also complete save for some sections which still do not have a canopy. However, the sitting area is complete, including foldable seats with backrests akin to those in the VIP sections of the Raila Odinga International Stadium (Talanta Stadium) and Kasarani Stadium, among other top facilities.
The playing surface is also in pristine condition after the installation of an artificial turf as a way of providing a durable playing surface, as opposed to grass, which would be more expensive to maintain in the region due to insufficient rain.
The whole stadium is now fixed with seats, with the 10% of works remaining being the installation of a canopy across the stadium as well as the installation of a tartan track.
Beyond Madaraka Day celebrations, the facility is expected to boost the sporting ecosystem in the region.
