The game started with Marseille pressing high, but early opportunities went begging. In the 5th minute, Mason Greenwood reacted fastest to a rebound but sent his shot well over the crossbar.
Just two minutes later, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang found himself in the box after a precise pass but blasted the ball narrowly wide. Igor Paixao also had a promising solo effort in the 10th minute, but his shot from the edge of the area went just left of the target.
Marseille finally broke the deadlock in the 26th minute thanks to a huge mistake by Brest’s goalkeeper. Angel Gomes struck a low free-kick toward the center of the goal, and the keeper fumbled, allowing the ball to cross the line.

In the second half, Remy Labeau-Lascary dribbled through the Marseille defense in the 52nd minute, only to be denied by a brilliant save from Geronimo Rulli.
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg also came close in the 68th minute with a low shot from inside the box, but Radoslaw Majecki read the attempt and kept it out.
Marseille had further chances to extend their lead, with Nayef Aguerd heading over from a corner in the 74th minute, but the score remained 2–0.
