The first tournament win of the season was overshadowed by the debuts of Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha

Manchester United fans had been eagerly waiting for the debuts of Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, anxious to see what the duo—signed for a combined 150 milion—could bring to the table. Ruben Amorim decided to grant their wish, starting the two biggest summer signings in the match against Everton, which ended in a 2–2 draw—enough for the Red Devils to win the Premier League’s pre-season tournament.

Some might say they lifted a trophy as soon as they arrived at Old Trafford, but what United fans can truly be pleased with is how their team has looked during the pre-season. It seems that Mbeumo is already hinting he could be a real asset for the Red Devils. The Cameroonian winger was one of the most active players on the pitch, twice setting up teammates with first-touch passes that put them one-on-one with Jordan Pickford—only for them to fail to beat the Everton keeper.

On the other hand, Cunha didn’t make the best impression. There’s concern about how he and Bruno Fernandes will function together, as both tend to occupy the same areas of the pitch. Cunha struggled both on the ground and in the air—he lost many duels, misplaced passes, and was subbed off in the 72nd minute for Rasmus Hojlund.

Fortunately for United fans, Bruno was in excellent form. In the 19th minute, he converted a penalty to cap off the Red Devils’ early pressure. Midway through the second half, he set up Mason Mount perfectly, and the former Chelsea midfielder slotted the ball past Pickford.

What could worry Amorim is the lack of focus in the defensive line, as United players have now scored own goals in back-to-back matches. In the previous game against Bournemouth, Matthijs de Ligt netted an own goal, and this time Aidan Heaven did the same. In the 75th minute, he mishit the ball and sent it into his own net, sealing the final result. Before that, Everton had scored through Iliman Ndiaye.
