Junior Starlets will take on North Korea on Sunday 20 October at Estadio Cibao FC from 2300hrs
Junior Starlets forward Marion Serenge has promised Kenyans that the team will perform better and produce improved results in their subsequent FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup matches.
Kenya Under-17 finally made their debut in the intercontinental tourney on Friday in a match against England with the end result being a 2-0 win in favour of the 2008 semi finalists.
Two goals, either side of half time, first a 29th-minute penalty by Lola Brown and an 87th-minute goal by Lauryn Thompson were enough for England to down debutants Junior Starlets.
Speaking to the press after the match, the 16-year-old attributed the loss to the inexperience in the Kenyan squad
“The game was really tough. We have tried our best. Since it is our first experience, we are going to prepare more,” she said.
The Archbishop Njenga Girls High School, Kakamega student added the team will retreat to their training base and work on the areas of weaknesses after their World Cup induction.
“We have now experienced it (World Cup), we know it is going to be better for us as we are going to work on our weak points,” she added.
Serenge was confident that the team would find a winning formula in their next game and called on Kenyans to keep their faith in the team.
The Mildred Cheche-coached side will be chasing a historic first win in the FIFA World Cup but will have to dig deep as they face the tournament's most successful side, North Korea.
“I can tell the fans that it is not like we have lost it all, we are going to regain it by working on our weaknesses to improve ahead of our next match,” said Serenge.
Junior Starlets will take on North Korea on Sunday 20 October at Estadio Cibao FC from 2300hrs before completing their group matches with a clash against Mexico on Thursday 24 October.
