The iconic Bayern Munich player will be free in May and can choose where to go
Bayern legend Thomas Muller (35) played his last Der Klassiker on Saturday. The Bavarian club’s management has decided not to extend the contract with the great veteran, meaning that this June, after 25 years, 745 matches, 248 goals, and 274 assists, Muller will leave Munich. He recorded his 274th assist last night in the comeback against Dortmund. Although the home team didn’t win in the end (2–2), Muller, along with Leon Goretzka and Josip Stanišić, received the highest ratings among Bayern players.
As expected, there were plenty of emotions at the Allianz Arena after the match... One of the first questions Muller was asked by journalists was about his playing time this past season.
“Of course, I understand that I’m not 20 anymore. I’m not dumb or naive. But I also know I can still help the team, still be a threat around the opponent’s box. That said, we mustn’t forget that here at Bayern, we’re at the absolute top of world football. The competition is incredible, so all this talk about minutes is starting to get a bit tiresome” he said.
The 2–2 draw in yesterday’s derby left both camps in relatively good spirits. Borussia Dortmund’s sporting director Sebastian Kehl even joked that Muller could join them at the Westfalenstadion: “Maybe we should try to sign him to play for Dortmund”. Thomas Muller was quick to reply to Kehl comment.
“The Yellow Wall would be confused. They wouldn’t know whether to throw beer at me or flowers onto the pitch. Did I receive an offer from Dortmund? No, no, I haven’t. Signings from Bayern don’t tend to go over too well there” Muller replied with a smile. He was referring to Niklas Sule. The German international has played for both clubs. After five years with the record champions, he joined BVB on a free transfer in the summer of 2022. Since his arrival, Sule has made 87 appearances for Dortmund. His contract with Borussia runs until June 2026.
