The 2018 Mozzart Bet Cup champions have endured a torrid run of form this season and spent the better part of the campaign at the bottom of the FKF Premier League standings, and are currently in a fight against relegation.
The situation has been so dire that the team had only managed two league wins in 18 matches before they downed Ulinzi Stars 1-0 in their last league match played on Sunday, 1 February.
Speaking to the press after the match, Muluya elucidated the malady affecting his side this season.
“We are victims of our own success. We have produced good players over the years, and keep losing them and rebuilding over again.
A player like Leonlevvit (Otieno), who was our lead scorer, but we lost him, and even went on to lose Biko (Steve) to Nairobi United.
If you look at the league currently, we have a couple of players who passed through the ranks of Sharks in almost every team. That is what is affecting us this season,” said Muluya.
The Junior Stars tactician also revealed the strategy that ended their five-match winless streak.
“We first agreed that we would try not to concede. We conceded 27 goals last season, and instead of improving, we have already soaked in 21 goals, including four apiece from Gor Mahia and Nairobi United.”
With the win, Sharks disentangled themselves from the relegation zone to rise to 15th on the log with 17 points, a point and place above the drop zone, a matter Muluya weighed in on.
“Still a big fight in front. We are still on the edge, but after several matches without a win, the result is a sigh of relief for the team.
The win is definitely a turning point because it brings about a positive mentality to the team. It is really tough to be down there and prepare for matches,” he stated.
