A second-half strike by Davies Agesa sealed the points for the Shoppers, handing MCF, coached by Vincent Nyaberi, their second consecutive defeat of the campaign.
The result temporarily moved Elvis Ayani’s Naivas to the top of the 20-team table with six points, following their 1-0 opening weekend win over Fortune Sacco.
MCF, who underwent a major rebuild during the off-season transfer window, remain bottom without a point.
Mwatate United 2-2 Nzoia Sugar
Mwatate United marked their homecoming to second-tier football with a dramatic and controversial 2-2 draw against Nzoia Sugar FC at Wundayi Stadium, their first home NSL match in nearly four years.
After a goalless first half, the visitors burst into life in the second stanza with Wycliffe Wanyonyi opening the scoring in the 56th minute.
A minute later, in-form striker Felix Seda doubled Nzoia’s advantage with a stunning strike from the edge of the box.
The hosts, however, hit back in the 66th minute when Felix Busaka converted from the spot after Nasser Shikokoti was adjudged to have handled the ball in the 18-yard area.
Four minutes later, Kuanpel Deng pounced on a rebound from a free-kick to level the contest, sparking wild celebrations among the home fans.
After the match, a visibly frustrated Nzoia Sugar FC head coach Charles Odera blamed the officials for what he described as “unfair refereeing” that denied his side all three points.
“From the first whistle to the end, the referee was against us. We scored in the first half, but the goal was disallowed under unclear circumstances. Every time we had a chance to score, we were flagged offside,” Odera told Mozzart Sport.
“In the second half, we managed to score two goals, but then they were given a bogus penalty and a controversial free-kick. If we continue with this kind of officiating, we are not helping football in this country.”
Mwatate’s assistant coach, Martin Mutembei, disagreed, insisting the refereeing was fair.
"I can’t blame officiating because the same thing happened to us in Migori last week. The referee has his time to do his work,” he said.
The draw saw Nzoia drop to third place with four points after two matches, while Mwatate sit 16th with one point.
Equity Bank 3-1 Kabati Youth
In Nairobi, Equity Bank claimed their first-ever NSL victory with a 3-1 comeback win over Kabati Youth at the Vapor Grounds in Kawangware.
Kabati took the lead through former Bidco United winger Kelvin Mwaura, but the Bankers rallied, with Omar Kipngetich equalising before Bevex Kampamba netted twice to seal the historic win.
Equity joined the second tier this season after merging with SamWest Blackboots at the end of last campaign.
The NSL action continues on Sunday with five matches lined up across various venues.
