Kenyan international John Ochieng is carefully weighing his options in the interest of making the best move before the start of the new season.

Ochieng is currently a free agent after running out of contract with Zambian Super League side Zanaco, a club he joined last year on a year-long deal.

The defensive midfielder punched above his weight in his first season outside Kenyan borders as he was a key player for Zanaco alongside his compatriot Dennis Ng'ang'a

His performances in Zambia procured him his first call up to the Harambee Stars ahead of two 2026 World Cup qualifier matches, against Burundi and Ivory Coast, that were played last month.

Ochieng was further involved in the COSAFA Cup with the national U23 team the Emerging Stars a testament to his growth since moving to Zambia.

Besides the national team call up, Ochieng attracted interest from Rwandese giants APR who have been splashing cash in a bid to rebuild for the CAF Champions League.

Ochieng revealed that APR were still in hunt for his signature and Zanaco had ignited contract extension talks perhaps after being impressed with his input in his first season at the club.

The former Chemelil Sugar midfielder says he is not in a rush to our pen to paper as he intends to study the offers carefully and settle for the best.

"The two teams have so far shown interest and I believe more will pop up. I am weighing the options and consulting far and wide," he said.

Looking back to the past season, the former Gor Mahia midfielder termed it one of the best campaigns he has ever had in his career.

He said the experience he gained in Zambia has shaped him to a better player and is looking forward to more success and titles in the new season.

"It was one of the best seasons in my career. It was my first season outside Kenya and despite lacking the experience, I managed to get regular playing time," added Ochieng.

The former Tusker midfielder won the Kenyan Premier League with Gor Mahia in the 2022-2023 season.
