Rennes feel firsthand how lethal tandem Greenwood & Auba can be

The Englishman and Gabonese combined for two goals and an assist in Marseille's easy 3-0 win against the popular Red and Blacks in the Coupe de France Round of 16

Even though their Ligue 1 results are mediocre and Roberto De Zerbi's job is in jeopardy, Olympique Marseille cruised past Rennes (3-0) to advance to the Coupe de France (French Cup) quarter-finals.

In the league, L'OM sit in third place and trail nine points behind the leaders Paris Saint-Germain, and it's by no means a satisfactory position considering the team's offensive potential. And when we say "offensive potential", we mean the lethal tandem Marseille have.

Last night, Mason Greenwood and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang combined for two goals and an assist, proving to be unstoppable when they are in the right mode. To make matters worse for Rennes, the duo yesterday received significant additional help from Amine Gouiri, leaving the Red and Blacks little room for a surprise.

The Algerian broke the deadlock just two minutes into the game, and then provided an assist for Greenwood's goal less than a minute after the break. Aubameyang came off the bench in the 78th minute, and only five minutes later, he found the net himself, converting the Englishman's assist into a 3-0 victory.

After successfully overcoming the Cup challenge, Marseille can now turn their complete focus to a derby clash against PSG (Sunday, 22.45), which could be their last chance to return to the title race. Anything but a win could mean the end of Ligue 1 trophy dreams for L'OM and potentially the end of De Zerbi's stint on their bench.
