Tottenham have agreed deals for Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes, with both transfers threatening to become the biggest in the club's history
Tottenham Hotspur are on the verge of completing one of the most ambitious transfer splurges in the club's history, with Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes both set to arrive in deals worth a combined £185 million.
The north London club have already agreed a club-record move for Tonali from Newcastle United, with the transfer expected to reach £100 million (£92.5m guaranteed plus £7.5m in performance-related bonuses). The Italy international is due in London on Thursday to undergo his medical before signing a six-year contract that will keep him at Spurs until 2032.
However, Tonali's record may not last long.
Tottenham have also struck an agreement with West Ham United to sign highly rated midfielder Mateus Fernandes for a guaranteed £85m, with the final order of the announcements determining which player officially becomes the club's record signing.
Manchester City had also pushed to sign Tonali, but Spurs ultimately won the race for the 26-year-old, who enjoyed an impressive campaign at Newcastle with three goals and seven assists while helping the Magpies reach the Champions League knockout stages.
A product of Brescia's academy, Tonali rose to prominence with AC Milan before joining Newcastle in 2023 in a deal worth around £60.5m. His time in England included a 10-month suspension for breaching the Italian Football Federation's betting regulations, but he bounced back to establish himself as one of the Premier League's most influential midfielders, finishing his Newcastle spell with 10 goals and 10 assists in 110 appearances.
Fernandes, meanwhile, arrives after Tottenham outbid a number of rivals, including Manchester United, with West Ham refusing to lower their asking price for one of the country's brightest young midfielders. The 21-year-old, who has already earned a senior Portugal cap, opted for Spurs despite widespread interest from elsewhere.

The double swoop continues an aggressive summer rebuild under Roberto De Zerbi. Andy Robertson and Marco Senesi have both joined on free transfers, Jan Paul van Hecke arrived from Brighton for £52m, while Martin Dubravka has also strengthened the squad.
With Tonali and Fernandes now set to follow, Tottenham are sending a clear message that they intend to challenge on every front next season.
