The Robins, fresh from an away win over Norwich City, secured their first home victory in four games to climb to fourth place on the log with 19 points, six behind leaders Coventry City, currently managed by Frank Lampard.
Adam Armstrong opened the scoring for Southampton in the 30th minute, but Anis Mehmeti restored parity just three minutes later with his fifth goal of the season.
In the second half, Scott Twine netted twice to seal the win for Bristol City. Vyner was involved in the second goal after his deflected effort came off the upright before Twine tucked in the rebound in the 57th minute.
The midfielder then grabbed his brace six minutes later, driving from midfield before slotting past Alex McCarthy.
The victory marked Bristol City’s first back-to-back league wins since their triumphs over Hull City and Sheffield Wednesday earlier in the campaign.
Sammy Henia-Kamau
Elsewhere in England, another Kenyan, Sammy Henia-Kamau, played the entire match as Hull City Under-21s were held to a 2-2 draw at home by Huddersfield Town.
Henia-Kamau was a constant threat down the right flank, delivering dangerous crosses and linking play effectively. One of his early deliveries forced a fine save from Huddersfield goalkeeper Jacob Chapman.
He played a key role in Hull’s opening goal in the 56th minute, combining with Pharrell Brown before sending in a low cross that Hugh Parker converted from close range.
Huddersfield equalised through a deflected effort off Calvin Okike, but Hull regained the lead in the 71st minute when Okike’s long throw forced an own goal from George Iorpenda.
The visitors, however, salvaged a point in stoppage time when Jay Sway’s deflected strike found the net.
Silko Thomas Otieno
At the MKM Stadium, Silko Thomas Otieno, who is eligible to represent Kenya through his father, was an unused substitute as his Leicester City side fell 2-1 to Hull City in a Championship fixture.
Kenyan quartet at Tanzania Prisons
Across the border in Tanzania, Kenyan coach Zedekiah 'Zico' Otieno and players Michael Mutinda, Maurice Ojwang, and Henry Onyango helped Tanzania Prisons FC to a 2-1 victory over Mbeya City in the Mbeya Derby.
Ojwang and Mutinda started the match, while Onyango came off the bench to provide the assist for the winning goal.
