Nantes unearth a gem in the depths of the Czech second division

He didn't arrive as a big star, but he may leave as one. Young Tanzanian attacking midfielder Omar Abbas Mvungi has signed a professional contract with French Ligue 1 club Nantes following a series of successful trials.

Mvungi arrived via a rather unusual stop, having played for second-tier club MFK Vyskov in the Czech Republic. The attacking midfielder, born in 2004, played for the Tanzanian Under-17s and was regarded as their best player in last year's Cecafa U17 final, which Serengeti Boys lost to Uganda. He also spent some time at Cambiasso Academy in his homeland.

Vyskov is apparently a club investing heavily in developing young African players. They currently have players from Uganda, Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Nigeria, DR Congo and Togo in their squad. Mvungi's potential was tipped off by Alexis Alegue, another Vyskov player and former Nantes trainee. The Cameroonian recommended the Tanzanian after sharing the dressing room with the young talent since late July. He didn't take long to realize that Nantes would love to take a look at the youngster. A series of trials was arranged - and it worked!

Mvungi's agency announced that their client had signed a "long-term" contract with the Canaries. The 18-year-old arrives to strengthen the reserve team, currently 12th in the French National 2 group. If he fulfils his undeniable potential, he could become the first Tanzanian ever to play in Ligue 1.

"It's a proud moment for my family and me. I am very happy to sign my first professional contract at FC Nantes."

The African kid likes to play in the final third and doesn't shy away from duels and tackles. His physical ability is viewed as a valuable asset that can be used to develop Mvungi into a fine midfielder.
