In an exclusive interview with Mozzart Sport, the 33-year-old also revealed the delight of playing alongside fellow Kenyans Masoud Juma and Austin Odhiambo at nine-time Premier League champions, Nejmeh.
Akumu, together with Juma, have been at the club since last year and was recently joined by Odhiambo in January, who made the move from Gor Mahia.
“For me, it has revived memories of what I had while playing for Zesco United in Zambia. Then we had David ‘Calabar’ Owino and Jesse Were.
It feels special to play alongside fellow Kenyans and especially when all of you are in the starting line-up,” he said.
Akumu was at the Zambian club between 2016 and 2020 and won three Zambian Super League titles, apart from taking part in the CAF Champions League with the club.
From Zambia, he joined South African giants Kaizer Chiefs before moving to Japan where he spent a year with Sagan Tosu and Iran where he was in the books of Kheybar Khorramabad and finally settling at his current club in Lebanon.
Akumu revealed that the three Kenyans at the Lebanese club spend a lot of time together, besides being on the pitch.
“We have meals together frequently, and at the moment I have to pick and drop Odhiambo to and from training since he still has not learnt how to drive on the Lebanese roads,” he said.
Akumu further admitted that though the competition in the Lebanese league is not as high as in the FKF Premier League, the conditions are much better and clubs are more organised.
“The league has just 12 clubs and so we play fewer matches, thus it may not be as competitive compared to playing in Kenya. However, the clubs are run more professionally, and player welfare is top-notch.”
He further revealed that his biggest ambition is to help his club play in the Asian Champions League (AFC), a goal he says is shared by the club’s top hierarchy.
“My current contract is for one season with an option to renew for an extra year, but the ambition is to qualify for the AFC.
This is the highest level we can reach, and my desire is to achieve it with this team,” he added.
