The result saw Sharks extend their unbeaten run over Shabana since the Glamour Boys returned to the top tier
Shabana’s title hopes suffered a major blow after falling 2-1 to Kariobangi Sharks on Sunday at Gusii Stadium.
Second-half substitutes Razel Omondi and Markvivan Kesa were enough to cancel Brian Michira’s strike.
Heading into the match, Shabana were third on the log with 40 points, three behind AFC Leopards, who lost to Mathare United on Saturday, 15 March, and 10 off league leaders Gor Mahia.
Sharks, on the other hand, were ranked 14th with 22 points, just two points more than APS Bomet, who are in the relegation zone.
Shabana began the match as the better team, taking home advantage to settle in and control the early minutes of the game.
The Glamour Boys had a good chance in the 12th minute when Mark Okola found Austine Odongo with a neat pass in the area, but the latter could not connect to it.
Shabana also came close in the 34th minute, but Odongo once again missed from a Kevin Omundi cross.
Sharks had their fair share of chances through David Majak and the on-firm Humphrey Aroko, but they could not capitalize on them.
Shabana would take the lead in the 49th minute through Michira, who slotted home to send Gusii Stadium into a frenzy.
Buoyed by the goal, Shabana kept pushing for a second goal, but were let down by mispasses in the final third.
Sharks, who kept pressing in the game, would then get an equalizer in the 79th minute through second-half substitute Razel Omondi, who benefitted from a lapse of concentration in the Shabana defense.
The goal unsettled Shabana, whose defense went into sixes and sevens and were punished two minutes later by youngster Kesa, who scored the second goal for Sharks to silence the Gusii crowd.
With the result, Shabana remain third with 40 points while Sharks also remain 14th but with 25 points as they seek to disentangle themselves from the relegation matrix.
