Rising Starlets will be looking to go past their next opponent to qualify for the country's first ever appearance in the global competition
Kenya’s U20 women’s team, the Rising Starlets, secured passage to the next round of U20 World Cup qualifiers after beating Angola 4-0 in a return leg tie played in Angola on Saturday evening.
When the two sides met a week ago at Nyayo Stadium, Starlets beat Angola 6-1, and heading into the return leg, they needed to manage the game to secure passage to the next round.
They, however, did not just manage the game but went all out to beat the hosts in front of the home crowd in entertaining fashion, as striker Valerie Nekesa had promised after the first-leg win.
“We are going there to win. We want to thank the fans for the support they showed us today, and when we go to Angola, the goal is to get a win. We are not only going to score goals but also play good football there,” the confident striker said in a post-match interview at Nyayo Stadium.
Just like was the case at Nyayo Stadium, Nekesa scored Kenya’s first goal of the game in the sixth minute to complicate matters for the hosts. Anna Arusa then added a second in the 36th minute to give Kenya a comfortable halftime lead.
Any hopes of Angola pulling a comeback were put to bed in the 57th minute when Arusa scored Kenya’s third goal and her second of the game. Charity Midewa then added a fourth in stoppage time to complete the rout.
Kenya will now face Cameroon in the next World Cup qualification round. The central African nation saw off Botswana 6-1 on aggregate to set up a date with the Rising Starlets.
