UCL: Teams at mercy of others - Chelsea, Barca, City, Atletico...

Reading Time: 3min | Wed. 28.01.26. | 16:01

Most of the sides playing in the Champions League tonight will have to "look over the fence", apart from trying to win their own games

After going through all the teams whose destiny is in their own hands, it's time to look at the sides that will depend on other results, regardless of whether they fight for the TOP 8 or a mere progress to the knockout phase. There are a number of them.

First and foremost, the former are all the teams with 13 points, excluding Paris Saint-Germain and Newcastle - Chelsea, Barcelona, Sporting Lisbon, Manchester City, Atletico Madrid, and Atalanta.

Now, given that the Saint and the Magpies face each other at Parc des Princes, all of the aforementioned clubs could leapfrog the losing side from the Paris clash, or both in case of a draw.

However, there are only three places left, so goal difference will play a crucial role.

Chelsea have the most favourable tally (+6), but face Napoli, which are in a must-win situation. If they lose, they are out of the competition. Hence, the duel in Italy won't be a picnic for the Blues.

Barca and Sporting follow the London side (+5), but the complexity of their final matchday challenges is way different. The Catalans have a match point at Camp Nou against Copenhagen, while the Portuguese team face Athletic Bilbao on the road in a fierce atmosphere at San Mames.

Atletico, with a +3 goal difference, host Bodo/Glimt, and cannot be considered such firm favourites after what the Norwegians had done to Manchester City. Still, they are not much of a strong away team, so Diego Simeone's crew has fair odds to win and hope luck to be on their side.

Atalanta have the smallest chance of reaching the TOP 8, as they enter the final matchday with a +1 goal difference and play a road game against Royale Union St. Gilloise. Therefore, La Dea is most likely to advance from a high TOP 24 position and participate in the Round of 32.

Inter Milan, Juventus, and Borussia Dortmund's odds of securing a spot among the leading eight teams are minimal. The Italians secured their place in the knockout stage, while the BVB's likelihood of being eliminated is tiny.

Victor Osimhen's Galatasaray and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's Olympique Marseille will have to be careful, as the teams below them could easily leapfrog them and knock them out. And while the French face Club Brugge in Belgium and are in a position to at least avoid defeat, the Turks play against the Cityzens at the Etihad and are at a major risk of elimination if the other results don't go their way.

Tonight's fireworks are scheduled for 23.00, and only some crews will be able to enjoy them. We'll see which.
