Former Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama has revealed three coaches who greatly influence his coaching philosophy.

The former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder retired from playing in April after a stellar career that saw him make a name for himself in Europe and beyond.
Following his retirement, the 35-year-old embarked on nurturing his coaching career. Having already completed his UEFA B coaching license while still playing, Wanyama enrolled for the UEFA A Coaching License, which he is currently undertaking with the Irish Football Association (IFA).
With ambitions of coaching at the top level, the JMJ Academy graduate is slowly crafting his coaching philosophy, and has since opened up on the three coaches influencing his style.
“I have watched a lot of football and learned from a lot of coaches. I have learned a lot from Pochettino (Mauricio), who coached at Southampton and Tottenham, and improved me a lot,” said Wanyama.
The Argentine manager perhaps brought the best out of Wanyama, whom he bought at Southampton in July 2013, and later signed the former Kenyan international at Tottenham in July 2016, after he himself had joined the club in May 2014, before he was sacked in November 2019.
Wanyama also had praise for current Tottenham manager Roberto de Zerbi.
“I have followed and watched a lot of games by De Zerbi and I like how he sets up his teams to be competitive,” he added.
French Manager Wilfried Nancy also made it to Wanyama’s list, following their time together at Canadian and Major League Soccer (MLS) club Montreal Impact.
Coincidentally, Nancy had a brief stint at Wanyama’s former Scottish club Celtic last season.
“I also like Wilfred Nancy. He coached me at Montreal, and I had the privilege of seeing how he started his career and what he has turned himself into. I love how he started with the team, and what they have been able to achieve. You pick positives from different people, and hopefully apply them to come up with your own style,” he remarked.
