With a superb goal, the Aston Villa striker also set the final score at 1–0 in favor of the English side
Ollie Watkins and Aston Villa salvage the pride of English clubs in Europe. After several teams from England failed to secure victories in their matches, the Birmingham side managed to do just that.
Although the first half lacked quality, the second delivered plenty of it. The final score was set by Watkins, whose beautiful headed lob gave his team the advantage ahead of the return leg in England.

The first notable moment arrived in the 8th minute when Jadon Sancho attempted to take on Romain Perraud down the flank. The winger tried twice to get past the Lille defender, but Perraud stood firm and denied him both times with solid defending.
Villa struggled to create much early on and looked surprisingly sluggish despite having eight days to prepare for the match. Their best opportunity came in the 13th minute when Ollie Watkins burst forward with several teammates making runs around him. However, the striker overhit a pass intended for Emiliano Buendia on the left, wasting a promising situation as other options were also available.

In the 20th minute, Morgan Rogers found space between the lines and fired the ball across the face of goal. It was unclear whether the attempt was meant as a shot or a cross, but in the end it sailed harmlessly out of play.
Rogers tried his luck again in the 40th minute, this time with an ambitious strike from around 30 meters, but the effort flew well over the goal.
Lille then came closest to breaking the deadlock just before halftime. In the 43rd minute, Andrey Santos delivered a clever cross into the penalty area where Olivier Giroud rose to meet it, but the striker failed to make clean contact and his header bounced wide of the post.

The hosts continued to push forward a minute later. Perraud tested Martinez with a long-range strike that bounced awkwardly just in front of the Villa goalkeeper. Martinez managed to parry the ball before Pau Torres cleared the danger.
Villa threatened early after the restart. In the 49th minute, Morgan Rogers capitalized on a turnover and found himself inside the box, but while off balance he skewed his effort wide of the target — another frustrating moment in what had been a difficult evening for the visitors in front of goal.
Lille responded in the 61st minute when Nabil Bentaleb curled an inviting cross into the area for Olivier Giroud. The experienced striker managed to meet it, but he could not generate enough power to seriously trouble Martinez.
Moments later, however, Villa struck with a goal that seemingly came out of nowhere. Ezri Konsa launched a long ball forward which Buendia flicked on. Ollie Watkins reacted quickest, spotting goalkeeper Ozer slightly off his line before producing a clever looping header that found the back of the net — a superbly taken finish that handed Villa the lead.

The visitors nearly doubled their advantage just four minutes later. Jadon Sancho delivered a cross that Lille failed to clear properly, leading to a blocked effort from Rogers. The rebound fell to Amadou Onana, who raced onto it and guided a shot toward goal, only to see it graze the outside of the post.
Villa continued to create danger, and in the 68th minute Watkins almost grabbed his second of the night. Douglas Luiz lifted a perfectly weighted ball over the defense, sending the striker through on goal. Watkins attempted to round the goalkeeper but lost his footing inside the box. Despite loud appeals from Villa players, no penalty was awarded, while the Lille goalkeeper required treatment after the collision.
The pressure persisted in the 72nd minute when Luiz won possession again and quickly released Watkins down the right. The forward delivered a dangerous cross into the area, but it narrowly evaded both Rogers and Buendia before bouncing out of play.
Lille thought they had a chance to respond a minute later as Correia broke through on goal after coming off the bench for Mukau, but the offside flag was raised — and his eventual shot drifted wide anyway.
The hosts came closest to equalizing in the 75th minute. Fernandez-Pardo cut inside from the left and curled a powerful effort toward the far corner, forcing Martinez into a superb diving save to his left to push the ball wide.
