The defeat denied Leopards a chance to climb to the summit, leaving them two points behind arch-rivals Gor Mahia, who still have a game in hand

AFC Leopards head coach Fred Ambani has urged his players to stay focused on the FKF Premier League title chase despite a heavy 3-0 defeat to Kenya Police FC on Saturday, 18 April.

First-half goals from Charles Ouma, Erick Ngava Zakayo, and Yves Junior Koutiama handed the Law Enforcers all three points at Nyayo Stadium, a result that lifted them to third on the table and dealt a blow to Ingwe’s push for top spot.

The defeat denied Leopards a chance to climb to the summit, leaving them two points behind arch-rivals Gor Mahia, who still have a game in hand.

Leopards had gone into the fixture sitting second on 55 points, knowing victory would have taken them to the top.

As it stands, Gor Mahia have an opportunity to stretch that gap to five points when they face Bandari on Sunday, 19 April.

Despite the setback, Ambani has refused to concede ground in the title race, instead shifting focus to the upcoming Mashemeji Derby, which he believes could define their run-in.

We have to find ways of winning the Derby because that is what we are left with as our next option. The players should not dwell on today’s slip; there is always another day, and we are still in the title race,” Ambani said after the match.

Leopards will take confidence from their 1-0 win over Gor Mahia in the reverse fixture as they prepare for the highly anticipated clash set for Sunday, 26 April at Nyayo National Stadium.

The loss to Police, however, exposed defensive weaknesses, with Ingwe’s backline struggling to cope with the hosts’ attacking threat throughout the first half.

Still, Ambani moved quickly to shield his players from criticism, insisting that errors are part of the game and should not overshadow their campaign.

“The defense was an issue today, but these are things that happen in matches; you cannot crucify them. We have to keep encouraging them to give us points,” added the former Wazito and Zoo FC tactician.

With the title race tightening and the derby looming, Leopards now face a defining stretch that could either revive or derail their ambitions.
