K’Ogalo, who strengthened their squad during the off-season transfer window with signings including Kibwage, Felix Oluoch, Lewis Bandi, Siraj Mohammed, and Bryne Omondi, went into the opening-day fixture as clear favourites.

However, the youthful visitors held their nerve and snatched victory with a last-minute penalty, leaving the champions stunned.

Reflecting on the loss, Kibwage described the manner of defeat as painful but emphasised that its significance is limited, given that it was the first game of the season. He stressed that the team has time to regroup and learn from the early setback.

“It was very painful to concede in the way we did, but the good thing is that it’s only the first match of the season.

Of course, we would have loved to start with a win and kick off our campaign positively, but we take the lessons and move on to improve in the next few games,” Kibwage told Telecomasia.net.

He remained confident that Gor Mahia will soon return to winning ways, pointing to the strength of the squad and promising to make the fans proud again.

“I do not doubt that we will bounce back. We have a very good squad capable of dominating, and soon we will get our rhythm.

I know the fans are disappointed we couldn’t win, but we assure them they will have something to smile about soon,” he added.

Coach Charles Akonnor, in his assessment, blamed wastefulness in front of goal for the loss. He noted that the team dominated possession but were unlucky not to convert the chances they created.

“We dominated about 70 per cent of the game and were unlucky not to score from the opportunities we had. That is the problem. In the first half, there was no mobility upfront. Chris was doing well, but he could not move as we wanted,” Akonnor explained.

Gor Mahia will next face Sofapaka FC on Saturday in Machakos, and Akonnor expects a strong response while maintaining the team’s style of play.

“We have to get back on track,” he said. “We will continue with the way we played, but now focus on composure in the final third to improve our game.”
