National men’s volleyball team, Wafalme Stars, get back to the court on Friday 15 March chasing a second win in group A of the ongoing Africa Games when they take on hosts Ghana from 1600hrs (1900hrs EAT).
The Elisha Aliwa-led side opened their campaign with a convincing 3-0 (25-16, 25-22, 25-16) win over Chad, and as they face the hosts, the East Africans are keen to continue their winning run.
“We are keen to build on Wednesday's win against Chad. The players here are optimistic that we will carry the day. Most of the players who are here were part of the team that beat Ghana last year and I don't see anything changing but we have to wait and see," skipper Brian Melly told Daily Nation.
Aliwa is hoping to guide the team to the podium as they make a return to the continental Games since 2011 when he was the side’s main setter, leading the team to bronze in Maputo.
Wafalme last played Ghana in the African Championship last year, winning 3-2 in the group stage and a similar score line in the ninth-place playoff, a feat that has the players believing they could go past the hosts and seal top place when they face Gambia in the final group match on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the men’s handball team under coach Peter Mwathi is looking to pick back-to-back victories when they play Benin in their second match of group B which has the hosts and Democratic Republic of Congo.
In their opening match against Ghana, Kenya picked a 27-22 win to get their campaign off to a positive start, a feat they will look to continue when they step on the court at 1600hrs (1900hrs EAT).
Ahead of the Games, coach Mwathi had said that they would be chasing a semis berth, a feat that the side could achieve should they manage to pick their second victory tonight.
Ghana’s men’s handball team lost 27-22 to Kenya in their opening group game at the Borteyman Sports Complex.
