
FEASSSA Games: Butere Girls, Kesogon maintain winning ways in Kakamega

In boys’ football, Ugandan giants St. Mary’s Kitende sent a strong message with a 9–1 demolition of Mpamba from Burundi
Butere Girls and Kesogon Secondary School maintained their fine start at the 2025 Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Association (FEASSSA) Games with crucial wins in their respective disciplines as action entered Day Two in Kakamega.
In basketball girls’ 5x5, Butere Girls overcame Olympic High School 57–51 in a tightly contested match at the Bukhungu Arena.
Butere dominated the first three quarters with scores of 20–16, 14–5, and 13–7, before surviving a late scare as Olympic rallied to win the final quarter 23–10.

Over at the volleyball courts, girls’ defending champions Kesogon continued their strong title defence with a 3–1 (25–11, 25–15, 22–25, 25–17) victory over Mwitoti. The Kenyan champions impressed with quick attacking play and sharp blocks despite dropping the third set.

Kichukiro of Rwanda stunned Kenya’s Highway 3–1, while Butere Boys and Uganda’s Buddo SS battled to a 1–1 draw.
Agai Mixed from Kenya defeated Rugunga of Rwanda 2–0.
Defending champions Musingu High were scheduled to face Kizuka of Tanzania in the evening fixture.
In boys’ Pool B handball, Kenyan sides Kimilili and Manyatta played out a 24–24 draw, Wampewo Ntakke of Uganda beat Tanzania’s Kilombero 38–25, while Rwanda’s Adegi overcame Gombe SS of Uganda 33–30.
Volleyball boys’ Pool A saw Mwaluphamba lose narrowly to Standard HS 2–3, PSVF of Rwanda fall 1–3 to Bukedea, and Malava edged out 2–3 by St. Luc. In Pool B, St. Jerome beat Bugogwa 3–0 while St. Philippe defeated Gogo by the same margin.
In girls’ Pool B, Mwanhunzi of Tanzania beat Tororo 3–0, while Sulumeti shocked Bukedea 3–0.
The day’s action was preceded by the official opening ceremony of the Games at Bukhungu Stadium, graced by Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos Ogamba, who represented President William Ruto.
In his remarks, Ogamba hailed the FEASSSA Games as a unique platform for fostering East African unity, talent development, and cultural exchange.
“We are the region with the best-organized platform for nurturing lifelong friendships and celebrating shared values through sports,” said Ogamba, urging partner states to continue investing in school sports as a stepping stone to continental and global competitions.

Ogamba commended Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania for jointly hosting the ongoing African Nations Championship (CHAN) and preparing for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in coming months, saying such milestones inspire young athletes to aim higher.
