Gideon Tarus' GSU looking to reclaim KVF men's title

Action resumes on 23 January in Iten for the third league leg

Gideon Tarus’ General Service Unit (GSU) have their work cut out as they look to reclaim their Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) men’s league title, having relinquished the title to Prison Kenya in the last season.

The former champions have won their three league matches in the 2024/25 season so far, and while that does not reflect on their form as they are yet to be put to the sword, their performance at the Kipchumba Karori Eldoret International Volleyball tournament, held in December, has raised doubts.

The paramilitary side lost to Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) in the semis, effectively losing out on a chance to defend the invitational tourney's title, a gong they had won in the previous edition. They went on to fall to Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) in the third-place match.

“Our performance in the December tournament, while worrying, was expected as the team is still regrouping and gelling after a few additions. I, however, believe we will hit top form by February,” Tarus says.

“Playing a tournament has slightly different optics than handling the league so this does not worry me. I am confident in my side’s abilities and with some adjustments, we will compete for the title.”

The team is back in training after the festive break, readying for the first KVF event of 2025, the third leg of the men’s league set for Thursday 23 and Friday 24 January in Iten, Elgeyo Marakwet County, with two more days set for the Governor’s Tournament.

“With the next league leg set to be played outdoors, we will have about three weeks of preparations and I believe all players will be raring to go for the assignment. However, we still have a bit more work to do before we can declare ourselves title-ready,” Tarus added.

GSU are currently fourth on the 16-team log headlined by defending champions Prisons Kenya with KPA and Equity Bank second and third. The top three have played six matches but for KPA who have five. The holders are the only other unbeaten side.
