In the last edition in Birmingham, Kenya sent three teams including the women's wheelchair 3x3 basketball side
In what will be good news for Team Kenya, the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) on Friday 7 February confirmed that the 3x3 team quota for the Glasgow 2026 Games will be increased to 12 men’s and 12 women’s teams.
The move, one reflecting the growth of the game, represents a 50-percent increase from the quota allocation at Birmingham 2022, that saw eight men’s and eight women’s teams compete.
Both Kenya men’s and women’s teams participated in the 2022 event that debuted the 3x3 game.
Their historic journeys however came to a halt at the respective quarter-final stages; the women’s side falling 21-12 to England while the men fell 20-15 to Australia.
Now with spots increased, the likelihood of Kenya - the only nation from Africa to qualify in 2022 - will now have better chances, fueled by increased exposure over recent years.
The biggest success for the sport in Kenya came back in December 2023, when the women’s side won the FIBA 3x3 Africa Cup, but fell agonizingly short of qualifying for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
Speaking of the new quota allocation, FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis said: “We are delighted that 3x3’s quota has been increased. The decision is a testament to the great debut success of 3x3 at Birmingham 2022 and the growing popularity of 3x3 in Commonwealth nations and around the world.
“We have no doubt that with more teams competing at Glasgow 2026 we will be able to build on the success of Birmingham to deliver a thrilling competition and powerful global legacy.”
The same quota will apply to the 3x3 wheelchair game, where Kenya ladies team will stand to benefit more, having also made the 2022 Games in Birmingham.

Chief Executive of the Commonwealth Games Federation, Katie Sadleir CNZM, said: “The 3x3 Basketball and 3x3 Wheelchair Basketball competitions were brilliant to watch at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games so we are pleased they are back!
“Their success means they are bigger than before with the 3x3 Basketball competitions for men and women extending from eight teams to 12 and the 3x3 Wheelchair Basketball for men and women going from six teams to eight, meaning more games to enjoy!”
The 2026 Commonwealth Games take place from 23 July to 2 August 2026.
