Kenya Handball Federation (KHF) men’s league title hopefuls General Service Unit (GSU) have their work cut out in their quest for a maiden title.
Team Manager Gabriel Otwane says the paramilitary side has what it takes to challenge for the league trophy but insists it will take consistency for them to achieve the lofty target.
Currently at the helm of the 25-team log, after 14 wins in and one loss for 28 points, Otwane admits that their loss to Strathmore University has dented their run but, in a quick rejoinder, says that will not stop them.
“With our eyes firmly set on the title, the loss to Strathmore was a setback as that was a match we could have won easily. However, we missed some key players, including one of our lead scorers, Phillip Oscar, and ended up losing by a single goal.
With other title favourites still unbeaten, we have to be consistent both in training and in our performances as we have some catching up to do.
We are yet to play three of the top teams, holders National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB), Super Cup champions Ulinzi HC and Equity HC, all unbeaten and these are crucial matches to win if we are to give ourselves a chance at the title,” Otwane told Mozzart Sport.
The paramilitary side has their next fixture set for April 20 against Trans Nzoia. “We are not resting on our laurels. Team training continues as, despite enjoying a break this weekend, we know what lays ahead and we must be prepared. We are continuing with our training for the upcoming matches,” he continued.
Ulinzi HC are second on the log, a point behind Otwane’s charges with a game in hand, while bankers Equity are third on 26, having played two matches less than the leaders. NCPB and Strathmore complete the top five log standings on 24 points, having played 12 and 17 matches, respectively.
