KPA coach Ojukwu unfazed by EOF loss, shifts focus to league title

The Dockers are looking to continue their league dominance

Coach Antony Ojukwu’s confidence in his charges’ ability to retain the Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) women’s league title has not been moved despite Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) losing the Eliud Owalo Foundation tournament.

Heading to the tournament as favourites, the star-studded KPA squad was stunned by varsity side Zetech Sparks, losing the final to a side that had previously never picked a win against them, at least not in the league.

“I honestly cannot pinpoint an area my players did not execute. It was just part of the sport that we lost. They were better than us and deserve the win,” an unfazed Ojukwu says.

The focus shifts to league action where Ojukwu will hope to guide KPA to yet another title. He maintains that the title is Dockers’ to lose, but was quick to call out the lack of organization that has seen them finish the regular league ahead of the rest.

“We will be back in training soon ahead of the league playoffs,” he continues.

“The dilemma, however, is we will be out of action for probably more than a month as other teams are still playing the second leg matches. This makes it tough to have the players in their best game shape when the playoffs roll around,” Ojukwu lamented.

KPA won last season's title, sweeping Sparks in the best-of-five final series and are keen to retain the title for another shot at continental glory when they grace the Africa Women Basketball League (AWBL).
