However, this year’s results signal a shift in the balance of power within the region.

In rugby 15s boys, defending national champions Vihiga High School were knocked out in the semifinals following a 7-0 loss to Kakamega High School.

Kakamega High will now face Bungoma High School, who secured a commanding 21-0 victory over Senende Boys, in what promises to be a tightly contested final.

In the girls’ category, Mwira Girls and Kimobo Girls progressed to the final after edging past Madira (7-0) and Mbakalo (8-7) respectively.

In handball, reigning national champions St Luke’s Kimilili (boys) remain on course to defend their crown after beating Mukumu Boys 24-7 in the semifinals.

They will, however, face a stern test against Musingu High School, who saw off Cheptais 30-15 to reach the final.

The girls’ final will see defending national champions Moi Girls Kamusinga take on Butere Girls High School.

Kamusinga dominated their semifinal with a 34-9 win over Moi Girls Nangina, while Butere comfortably beat Lusengeli Girls 20-8.

In hockey, defending national boys’ champions Musingu High School showed their class with a dominant 7-0 victory over Kolanya Boys, booking a place in the final.

They will face Friends School Kamusinga (FSK), who defeated Kaimosi Boys 2-0 in the second semifinal.

The girls’ competition saw a major upset, as defending national champions Tigoi Girls advanced to the final but will face a resurgent Shieywe Secondary School, who edged Moi Girls Kamusinga 2-1 in a tightly contested semifinal.

Tigoi secured their place in the final with a 2-0 win over Misikhu Girls.

In basketball, reigning national champions Butere Girls High School underlined their dominance with a commanding 135-27 win over Eregi Girls in the semifinals.

They will face Tigoi Girls, who beat Lwanya Girls 69-23, in another semifinal.

In the boys’ category, Friends School Kamusinga (FSK) booked their place in the final with a 92-62 win over Sigalame Boys, while Nambale Boys defeated Kibabii Boys 72-42 to set up a showdown for the regional title.

The semifinal results highlight both continuity and change within Western Region.

While teams like Musingu, Butere, Kimilili, and Moi Girls Kamusinga remain in contention, the elimination of Vihiga High in rugby signals a potential shift ahead of the national games.

Western Region will still be expected to produce strong contenders for Kisumu, but the emergence of sides like Kakamega High, Shieywe, and Nambale suggests increasing depth and competition within the region.
