Mburu to chase Olympic shooting spot on Thursday after narrow miss

Kenyan shooter Priscilla Mburu’s quest to securing a spot in next year’s Paris 2024 Olympics in the 10m Air Rifle event took a big hit on Tuesday 3 October as she finished fifth in the individual event at the Africa Shooting Games Qualifiers in Cairo, Egypt.

Among the individuals under the Olympic Solidarity scholarship run by the National Olympic Committee of Kenya, Mburu, who is also registered to take part in the 50m rifle prone event, finished fifth in the first round of the10m Air Rifle Qualifiers, totaling a sum of 614.9 from her six shooting rounds, and booking her place in the finals series.

There, Mburu had a final total of 179.2, placing another fifth position and subsequently missing the two Olympic slots available in the event.

Houda Chaabi of Algeria and Khalil Remas of Egypt were the top two finishers with 242.5 and 242.3, all making the Olympics spots.

Mburu will however have another chance of redeeming herself when she takes part in the women’s 50m rifle prone event scheduled for Thursday 5 October.

In another category, the duo of Mburu and Gulraj Sehmi finished fourth in the 10m Air Rifle Mixed Team event on Wednesday 4 October.

The duo, who had scores of 307.1 and 306.0 in the qualifications round missed out in the bronze-medal shoot-out to the Algerian pair of the aforementioned Chaabi and her compatriot Koceila Adoul, with Egypt’s Ibrahim Magdi and Jana Abdellah clinching gold.

In his individual event, Sehmi finished fifth in the 10m Air Rifle ahead of fellow Kenyans Sanford Otundo and Gurupreet Dhanjal who came in 13th and 14th respectively, but ended up finishing sixth in the final round on Tuesday with a score of 160.8.

In the 10m Air Pistol category, the trio of Maurice Morara, David Kirui and Christopher Saina finished 13th, 17th and 19th respectively, with Doreen Atieno, Marianne Cherotich, and Jane Wanjiru ranking 12th, 15th and 17th in the 10m Air Pistol event.

The qualifiers go on till 10 October in the Egyptian capital.
