
New 13,000-seater stadium in Coast region receives upgrade

The 2024 Mashujaa Day host, Kwale Stadium has received a major boost aimed at its upgrade from the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports.
The Ministry donated to the County Government of Kwale who own the stadium a consignment of 8,000 seats and modern goal posts to improve the state of the stadium.
In a ceremony on Monday 20 February held at the stadium, the ministry through the Sports Kenya Director General, Gabriel Komora who represented the Cabinet Secretary for Sports, Hon. Salim Mvurya and attended by Kwale Governor Fatuma Achani handed over the sporting equipment.
Achani thanked President William Ruto who promised to improve the stadium further after the initial construction for purposes of holding the 2024 Mashujaa Day
“I extend my heartfelt gratitude to H.E. President Dr. William Ruto for his unwavering support in ensuring that Kwale Stadium meets international standards.
His commitment to sustainable development projects in our county continues to uplift our sports infrastructure, creating opportunities for young talents to thrive,” said Achani.
The Governor highlighted the improvement that the equipment will add to the infrastructure of the 13,000 seater stadium and the development of sports in the coastal county.
“Equipping the stadium will ensure that our people can enjoy sporting events such as football matches in a dignified environment. Together, we are committed to fostering sports excellence in Kwale," she continued.
Kwale Stadium adds to the number of sporting facilities in the country that are under construction as a way of spurring the development of sports across the country.
Notably, the country has been undertaking major renovation works at Nyayo National Stadium and Moi International Sports Center, Kasarani to make them ready for the upcoming 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) in August 2025 and the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Additionally, a brand new ultra modern Talanta Sports City is also being built in readiness for the 2027 AFCON and is expected to be ready by end of 2025.
Counties have also not been left behind with several launching of them improving their facilities including Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay and Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Stadium in Siaya.
