President Ruto leads Kenyans in mourning fallen sports journalist Sean Cardovillis

President William Ruto has led people from all walks of life in mourning the late Capital FM sports journalist Sean Cardovillis, who passed away Saturday morning.

Sean breathed his last on Saturday morning, according to his employer, Capital FM.

We are deeply saddened to announce that the world of sports has lost one of its most iconic voices—Sean Cardovillis. The renowned sports commentator who worked here at Capital FM passed away this morning at his house in Westlands, and his family has been informed. Sean’s powerful commentary and infectious enthusiasm for sports made him a household name locally and internationally. At Capital FM, we pay tribute to the man who brought sports to life for millions of our listeners around the world. We pass our condolences to the family, colleagues, friends, and our listeners following this devastating report,” eulogized the media company.

Friends and colleagues in the media industry, politicians, various sports federations, sportsmen, and Kenyans from all walks of life mourned Sean as a dedicated journalist who left a rich legacy behind.

As soon as Capital FM broke the devastating news, tributes began to pour in from the world of sports and beyond, with President Ruto sending his message of condolence to Sean’s family and media fraternity.

Saddened by the passing of a brilliant and outstanding sports broadcaster, Sean Cardovillis. He was a cool, insightful, and gifted journalist who played an integral role on our radio stations. We will miss his clear and concise voice, passion, and upbeat personality. Our prayers are with his family and the media fraternity at this painful time. Rest in Peace, Sean,” wrote the Head of State on his social media accounts.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua acknowledged Sean’s rich understanding of sports matters, specifically motorsport, while mourning the departed journalist.

Saddened by the untimely death of renowned sports journalist Sean Cardovillis, who passed on this morning. His wit and wide knowledge in various sports, especially Motorsport, will be greatly missed,” Gachagua tweeted.

Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba conveyed his condolences to Sean’s family.

On my own behalf and on behalf of the ministry.I join the family, friends, and colleagues of Sean Cardovillis in mourning this gifted yet humble Capital FM sports commentator. Rest well, brother!" tweeted Namwamba.

Safari Rally Kenya described Sean as a passion-driven sports journalist who left behind a rich legacy.

We ache for the loss of our motorsport maestro. His Lyrical commentary danced on the gravel, a melody of passion that now echoes in our hearts. As the checkered flag falls, his legacy lives on in every racing heartbeat,’ read a tweet from the body.

The Sports Journalists Association of Kenya joined the rest in eulogizing Sean.

The Kenyan Sports Journalists are saddened to learn of the shocking death of our colleague Sean Cardovillis, the voice of sports, who passed away this morning. Sean was a dedicated and outstanding Sports Journalist who will forever remain in our hearts. RIP our dear friend, Sean,” wrote SJAK.

Sean started broadcasting at Capital FM in 1997 and worked for the station for nine years before quitting for the Seychelles based Paradise FM.

He joined the Nation Media Group in 2014 and would work with the company until 2020.

He returned to Capital FM in June this year.
