KSSSA Secretary General David Ngugi confirmed that the two multi-discipline events, last staged in 2019, will now be held in Term One alongside cross country, track and field competitions.
Heptathlon, which consists of seven track and field events, will be contested by girls, while boys will compete in the decathlon, a 10-event discipline that tests speed, strength and endurance.
In the decathlon, athletes take part in: 100m, long jump, shot put, high jump, 400m, 110m hurdles, javelin throw, pole vault, discus throw and the 1,500m.
The heptathlon includes: 100m hurdles, high jump, shot put, 200m, long jump, javelin throw and 800m.
Athletes will earn points based on their performances in each event, with the overall winner determined by the highest total score, factoring in times, distances and heights achieved.
Ngugi said the KSSSA online portal will be reopened to allow registration for decathlon and heptathlon athletes who were not entered last year.
Only Form Three and Form Four students will be eligible to compete.
In addition, KSSSA is considering expanding its calendar to include beach volleyball, cricket and lacrosse, sports that were previously staged as demonstration events during the national championships and the Federation of East Africa Schools Sports Association (FEASSA) Games.
“We are in discussions with the Ministry of Education and other stakeholders on the inclusion of these games in our calendar. For them to be adopted, they must meet specific criteria. We shall communicate the way forward soon,” Ngugi said.
Meanwhile, Ngugi also confirmed that chess and scrabble competitions will be held in Term Two.
Chess made its FEASSA debut last year during the Games in Kakamega.
Elsewhere, more than 50 schools have already confirmed participation in the third edition of the Kisii School Open Tournament, according to tournament coordinator Dennis Omwansa.
The competition will feature senior schools, junior schools and institutions of higher learning.
Top institutions such as hosts Kisii School, Cardinal Otunga High School, Mosocho, Nyanchwa Boys, Kibabii Boys, Agoro Sare, Homa Bay High, Ojijo Oteko, Kisii University, Rongo University, Kisii National Polytechnic, Borabu TTC, Nyabururu TTC, Kereri Girls and Asumbi TTC expected to take part.
“We expect over 50 institutions to participate, and more teams have indicated they will confirm their entries by Friday,” Omwansa said.
