The men's league got underway on Saturday, 26 June at Nyayo Handball Court while the women's league is scheduled to make a return on July 5.

As the Kenya Handball Federation (KHF) men's league made a return after a three-month unprecedented break occasioned by Covid-19, title hopefuls, Strathmore University picked from where they had left in 2020 registering two wins over the weekend.

Up against Kenyatta University (K.U), the Peter Mwathi-coached side held their own in a tough match to win 23-19. Nicholas Munyua, Rashid Ingwela, Paul Ngige and Simon Mutuku each contributed four goals for the win.

In the second match of the weekend against Generation, Maxwell Munene led the onslaught as the varsity side thrashed the Eastlands-based side 39-14 to consolidate their 100% record on their return.

This was the first action for Mwathi's charges since March 2020 as they were yet to play when the league resumed in March 2021 for a weekend before a presidential directive suspending sporting activities took them right back to recess.

"This has been a very tough weekend and we faced quite the challenge. Having not played since 2020 has obviously taken its toll on the players and we did not play that well in the first match. In the second match, we were better but we have some work to do,"

"Compared to our 2020 form, we are not yet at our best. I can actually say we are way below average and we will have to work towards getting our form back if we are to compete with other title hopefuls. Before the league was stopped in 2020, we were at the helm and that's where we are aiming to be at the end of this season," said Munene.

The varsity side has maintained the team that did duty in the 2019/20 season with only two additions. Lucas Akatinda joins the goalkeeping department while Shadrack Lenku has come in to strengthen the side's defence as a left-back.

Meanwhile, new-look General Service Unit (GSU) proved a hard-nut to crack for opponents as they thrashed Generation 41-14, with Philip Oscar managing double digits with 13 goals. They concluded the weekend with a 27-21 win over Buccaneers.

Former champions Black Mamba blew hot and cold as they fell to Buccaneers 30-25 but came back with a vengeance to  to pick a 35-31 hard-fought win against soldiers Kahawa.
