Shujaa play two games on Friday against Uganda and Jamaica.
The national men’s 7s side, Shujaa are out to punch a ticket to the quarter-finals of the rugby Commonwealth Games as they face Pool D minnows Uganda and Jamaica on Friday 29 July.
Shujaa were Pooled against heavyweights Australia who are the only other core team in the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series to feature in the group, Jamaica and arch rivals Uganda.
Kenya will face neighbors Uganda in the opening clash of their Commonwealth Games that is slated for a 12:50 pm (EAT) kick off and will close the day with an encounter against Jamaica at 8:58 pm (EAT).
Damian McGrath who was appointed to replace Innocent ‘Namcos’ Simiyu back in May will be looking to avenge the loss that cost the latter his job when Shujaa were stunned by Uganda in the Africa Cup.
The former Samoa 7s head coach admitted that he understands bragging rights are at stake when Kenya take on Uganda and will be looking to get the tourney underway with a victory.
“I am fully aware of the rivalry plus everyone has been reminding me of that. I watched the 2022 Africa 7s cup game where they beat us in the semifinals and I could not believe it.
It is going to be a big opening game and we are looking forward to getting that one under the belt straight away,” the head coach told Mozzart Sport previously.
A win over the two sides on Day 1 will ensure Kenya book a quarter final ticket before facing Australia at 12:50 pm on Saturday.
Kenya will be looking to make history in the 2022 Commonwealth Games edition by winning their maiden medal in the tournament with their best place finish being 7th in the 2010 and 2014 edition.
