Up next for the Simbas is a clash against Eastern Province Elephants on Saturday 11 June.

Following the thoroughly entertaining 51-35 victory over Leopards in the Currie Cup Division One, Kenya Simbas head coach Paul Odera has pegged the impressive performance on hard work.

Simbas registered the impressive win over the Leopards courtesy of tries from Darwin Mukidza, Derrick Ashihundu, Dominic Coulson, Vincent Onyala, Eugene Sifuna and Thomas Okeyo.

Odera refused to accept that the win over the Leopards was down to magical performances but insisted that the victory boiled down to hard work from the entire team.

“There was a bit of magic on the field but a lot of it is due to the hard work which we have achieved with the boys in the last two months in South Africa. You can see this from the levels of conditioning and how much fitter they are.

The boys showed that they can stay in the fight and compete against teams like the Leopards so it's a bit about the magic but a lot of it is down to the hard work put in,” said Odera.

Simbas spent two months in South Africa while playing in the Currie Cup as build-up to their 2023 Rugby World Cup qualifiers slated for July in France.

Odera also commended the textbook set pieces from Simbas who won most of their lineouts and scrums in the game as they went on to dominate in the facet of play for huge spells of the encounter.

“Without a strong set-piece, we cannot play the game at the highest level, our set-piece is getting better and better and hopefully, if we can get into the 90% or 100% then we will be looking at a team that can compete against the better teams in the world.

Set piece is crucial and improvement in those numbers is a big part of getting us to compete,” added the former national 15’s rugby Under 20 head coach.
