Kabras RFC head coach Marlin Mukolwe has admitted that the absence of star player Kevin Wekesa has left a gaping hole in the team.

Wekesa, who plays for the Kenya Sevens, is currently representing Monaco Rugby Sevens in the 2025 In Extenso Supersevens, a month-long professional rugby sevens tournament in France that features elite Top 14 clubs and invited sides such as Monaco and the Barbarians.

Speaking to Mozzart Sport, Mukolwe noted that Wekesa's gap is sizeable, even as he expressed confidence in the squad’s ability to remain competitive in the ongoing National Sevens Circuit.

The French tournament kicked off on Wednesday, 16 August in Mont-de-Marsan, with subsequent rounds scheduled for Saturday, 23 in Dax and Saturday, 20 August in Pau.

The top eight teams from the 16 participants will qualify for the grand final in February 2026 at the Paris La Défense Arena.

“His departure definitely affected us. He’s a good player in the setup, and he brings an extra edge to the team, which we currently miss,” Mukolwe said.

“That said, we still have capable players, and we trust them to deliver. It’s not that our progress depends solely on him, but when he’s with us, it’s a big plus. Until then, we’ll keep working with what we have," he offered.

Wekesa’s absence has been felt on the circuit, particularly with Kabras finishing sixth at the Prinsloo 7s and eighth at the Christie 7s after securing third place in the Driftwood 7s opener, where he was instrumental.

His current stint in France marks his second season with Monaco after a successful 2024 debut, where he helped the side win a leg in Pau and secure silver in La Rochelle.

Joining him in Monaco is Daystar Falcons’ player Patrick Odongo, who is making his debut in the competition.

The two recently etched their names in history by becoming the first Kenyan players to feature in India’s inaugural Rugby Premier League in June, before linking up with Monaco for the French series.

The pair now follow in the footsteps of former Kenya Sevens stalwart Alvin “Buffa” Otieno, who guided Monaco to the Supersevens title in 2022.

This year’s edition maintains the familiar format, with the French Top 14 sides joined by Monaco and the Barbarians in the chase for silverware.

A women’s edition, introduced last year, will also run alongside, with the top four teams from Pau advancing to the Paris final.
