The year has been a stellar one for Kabras RFC rising star Jackson Siketa who has been at the top of his game.
The youngster was part of the team that won the 2024 Barthes Cup after defeating favorites Zimbabwe 28-13 to book a slot in the World Rugby U20 Trophy in Scotland.
Fresh from Scotland, where he showcased his skills on the international stage, Siketa was promptly included in Kabras RFC’s senior squad for the 2024 National 7s Circuit.
He quickly made his mark, scoring three crucial tries that helped Kabras secure their first-ever Dala 7s title. His performance was instrumental in propelling the team to a second-place finish in the circuit.
Reflecting on his journey, Siketa noted that the experience in Chipu came in handy during the circuit.
"I learned how to work effectively with my teammates both on and off the field. It enhanced my skills and boosted my confidence. Some lessons I gained like teamwork, communication, and adaptability helped me perform well in the circuit,” he told Mozzart Sport.
He has since managed to seamlessly integrate these lessons into his performance at Kabras, navigating the challenges of playing alongside seasoned veterans. His ability to transition smoothly between systems positioned him as a standout player in the fiercely competitive Kabras squad.
Siketa played alongside an experienced squad that included Derrick Ashiundu, Alfred Orege, Brian Mutua, and Griffin Chao among other stars.
"The adjustments I’ve had to make include adapting easily to new systems, which has made it easier for me to gel well with the experienced players," Siketa noted.
The youngster acknowledged that the tough competition at Kabras RFC became a driving force for him to reach his best form.
"I’ve been able to put my improved skill set to use and stand out," he averred.
Looking ahead, Siketa is clear about his aspirations. He is inspired by the accomplishments of Ugandan star Philip Wokorach.
“I look up to Wokorach. I’m working on applying the skills I’ve learned into my play and continually improving them,” he noted.
He has been included in the Safari 7s provisional squad where he hopes to make the final cut. The 36-man team will be whittled down to 26 for both Shujaa and Morans.
From the final 26, the final team for the World Sevens Series, which starts in Dubai in December will be selected.
“I will do my best. My dream is to represent Kenya,” he continued.
Siketa is an alumnus of western region rugby powerhouse Koyonzo High School who are the 2023 Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Association (FEASSSA) rugby 7s champions.
In 2023, Siketa bagged the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award at both the national and East African stage.
