Nondies RFC assistant coach Francis Theuri has outlined the club’s ambitions for the 2025/26 Kenya Cup season.

Speaking after their impressive 32-22 away victory over Kenya Harlequin, Theuri revealed that the side is firmly targeting a third consecutive playoff appearance.

The win over Quins lifted them to fifth place on the log with 13 points from four matches.

The side has so far registered two wins and two losses,as they seek to build momentum in the early stages of the campaign.

“I am very happy with the win. We have to give credit to Quins; they came out and gave us a hell of a game, so congratulations to them. That is the nature of the game; someone has to emerge as the winner.

Our boys played extremely well, controlled the game, and we walked away with the victory. It is always good to come to Quins and get the points, especially as we look to get our season back on track,” Theuri told Mozzart Sport.

Nondies emphatically opened their season with a 36-7 win over Kisumu RFC before suffering a narrow 22-16 defeat to Strathmore Leos.

They then went down 32-30 to Nakuru RFC in a closely contested encounter, before bouncing back against Quins to claim their second win of the season.

One of the major areas of concern for the side last season was endurance, an issue that Theuri admitted proved costly in key moments.

They would control games well early on, but towards full-time, they let it go. It showed in the Floodies' final against the Oilers and in their narrow loss to Nakuru, where they were beaten in the final minutes.

Against Quins, however, Nondies displayed improved staying power, something Theuri attributed to the work done behind the scenes.

“We showed good staying power on the pitch, and credit must go to the strength and conditioning team for the work they have put in with the boys. Coming straight out of Christmas, you can see they look fresh and sharp,” he said.

Consistency, Theuri added, remains the cornerstone of Nondies’ ambitions this season.

“Overall, consistency is every coach’s dream. You want solid performances week in, week out, and we are getting there. This match was a testament to that.

We will use it as a stepping stone and keep building. Our target has always been the playoffs, and that has not changed,” he revealed.

A key strength for the side has been their depth and flexibility in the halfback department.

The coaching staff have tactically rotated combinations, with positive results.

Against Quins, Alexander Deveraux started at scrum-half with Ian Mumbwani at fly-haas.

Against Nakuru, Deveraux retained the number nine jersey, as Tony Fidens operated at ten before later switching to fullback against Quins.

Another effective partnership has been Ronnie Omondi at scrum-half and youngster Kinyua Waiyaki at fly-half, notably during their Impala Floodlights victory over Strathmore.

In the Floodies' final, Deveraux paired with Bruce Odhiambo for the halfback roles.

“We are fortunate to have good depth in the halfback department. What we are always looking for is the right working combination. We are dealing with a few injuries, but despite that, we have been able to field a strong set of halfbacks every game.

This match further showed that we have players who can operate in multiple positions, which really helps us in setting up the game and driving the team in the right direction. We are very pleased with that,” he explained.

Nondies will be looking to build on their momentum when they face Kenyatta University’s Blak Blad on Saturday, 17 January, at the Ngong Racecourse.
