Shujaa face Australia, South Africa and Great Britain on Friday
The national men’s sevens side, Shujaa will be hunting for their first win of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series when they take to the field on Friday 2 December following a tumultuous week of off field drama.
Kenya 7s were the centre of social media rage after two players went public to ask for donations after months without salary with the online community fingering the Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) for failing the sport.
Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba however came to the rescue of Shujaa after he pledged to settle their outstanding allowances in a bid to raise the spirits of the team after a disastrous start to the season.
The onus will now be on Shujaa to perform after their dues were settled and will have little excuses despite being placed in a fiendish Pool in the tournament.
Damian McGrath’s side were grouped together alongside reigning series champions Australia, former champions South Africa and Great Britain.
Shujaa will kick off their tournament with Australia on Friday at 10:56 am (EAT) and will face South Africa at 2:20 pm (EAT) before closing Day 1 with a clash against Great Britain at 7:18 pm (EAT).
The team are coming off an outing to forget in Hong Kong where they lost all the games including against newly promoted Uruguay to finish joint last.
Shujaa will miss the services of Bush Mwale who is unavailable due to personal commitments while Vincent Onyala is out due to a season ending injury.
Bob Muhati from KCB RFC and Mwamba RFC’s Ronnie Omondi will be making their debuts in the tournament and will be hoping to leave a mark.
